In order for kids to grow up confident and capable, well-equipped with a healthy self-image, both girls and boys need to have various opportunities to look up to realistic and relatable role models.
Most children are influenced from an early age by the characters they see portrayed in movies and on television. But traditionally in film, girls and women’s roles showing females in strong, capable positions are few and far between. It doesn’t matter how much you tell kids about gender equality, if it’s not shown in the media, the message won’t come across.
Actor, Geena Davis noticed this disparity one day while sitting with her daughter, watching a children’s movie. Since that time, she’s been taking up the torch and working to move the gender equality scales in movies into a better balanced direction.
