The beliefs that we hold around food and our bodies stem from the relationship that we had with our families when we were growing up. Many of these beliefs are false and self limiting, keeping us in patterns of sabotage, often preventing us from achieving our weight loss goals.
This was the case with one of my clients. To protect her right to privacy, we’ll call her Connie.
Connie is in a highly competitive sales industry and the way that she feels about herself directly affects her bottom line. She came to me with a hope that the Emotional Freedom Technique could be applied to dealing with her anger. In her words, she was, “out of control.” She argued with everyone, was given to road rage, and couldn’t motivate herself to make or keep appointments. She was losing clients.
This is her account of what happened on one of my Craving Zapping Calls:
“That night I was angry and I wanted to eat, anything! I rated the anger in my body on a scale of 20 after Andrea asked me to gauge it from 0-10. As I began tapping with Andrea, I remembered that when I was younger, my older brother, Ben would beat me up almost every night after dinner because I didn’t say, “Please.” when I asked him to pass something at the table. For almost 40 years, I held onto those memories of being bullied by him. It hurt so much and I hated him for doing that to me.
As we tapped for a few minutes, on those feelings of hating my brother and feeling so vulnerable and out of control, I felt much better. As Andrea led me through the set up statements, I was unable to speak because I was choked up with emotion. I had been weeping silently. When it was over, after a good cry, I told Andrea that, “I feel so good now, I’m not even hungry anymore. In fact, I’m going to go and brush my teeth so I won’t even consider eating anymore tonight… And now after decades of holding onto this rage inside of me, if my brother, Ben were at the door right now, I’d actually be happy to see him. I can’t believe it! Now I’m finally free of that painful memory that held me back for over 40 years!
