Do you love cold, frosty treats? I do. With summer here, it’s delightful to enjoy something cool and refreshing. My choice is always something cold and frosty. I’m not generally crazy about many of the ice creams on the market because they are often too sweet for my taste. So because I’m so picky, I’m always looking for new ways to make it the way I want it. For on the go juicy joy–I love McDonald’s new Frozen Strawberry Lemonade, but I’d like it even better if I could make it at home.

Float_Coke Do you love cold, frosty treats? I sure do.

Last year my daughter, Cara had a great time making fresh orange granitas. She spent time squeezing the oranges and then after she got all the juice, she froze it in a metal tray. Then every hour or so she would scrape the ice down with a fork, which loosened all the juicy bits from the block of ice turning them into ice crystals. It took several hours to complete the job, but in the end it was so well worth it. Fresh orange ices.  Yum!

This summer I found a shortcut to reduce the work. Recently I bought a Cuisinart ice cream maker for about $50. I love it. It makes all kinds of wonderful icy treats like Cara’s orange granita or my favorite, frozen lemonade. I can whip up a batch of my own version of McD’s lemonade in just about 5 minutes. No fuss, no muss. I just pour some lemonade right into the previously frozen canister, and voila– a lemonade slushy. To add just the right amount of color and flavor, a teaspoon of grenadine does the trick. I might just use this machine for everything even water, ice teas and definitely my beloved Hawaiian Punch. — Love that slushy consistency.

Yesterday Cara made a coffee frappe. Today she decided to take the concept of the coke float and put it over the top, by creating coke ice cream. It was just equal parts of coke and ice cream blended in the machine. It was fabulous.

I can’t wait to try that idea with my favorite kidsicle treat; a creamsicle made The Juicy Woman way with fresh orange juice blended with vanilla ice cream. Yum! These recipes will definitely be part of my upcoming Juicy Woman Happy Pot Cookbook. Give ’em a try and let me know how you like them. What’s your favorite frosty treat?
