Date rape occurs when someone intentionally adds a date rape drug (also known as a predator drug) like rohypnol (roofies) or Xanax to the food or drink of an unsuspecting victim for the purposes of incapacitating them to make it easier to rape them later. In legal terms this is known as a drug facilitated sexual assault. And it often happens at parties or social occasions. According to the Centers for Disease Control, nearly 1 in 5 women experience rape in their lives. And 1/3 of those women are female college students.
Now that my daughter is no longer under my wing and she’s in college attending The Culinary Institute of America, I’ve had a couple of sleepless nights worrying about her safety. It’s every parent’s fear that their daughter/son will be violated. I’m no different. Despite knowing that Cara is not a drinker or into parties, I recently learned firsthand that date rape drugs can also be put into foods.
I heard a personal account of a male acquaintance of mine who was the victim of a gang rape many years ago because he ate the mint on the pillow of a cheap motel. After he fell asleep, and was awakened by the knock on the door, he groggily opened it and allowed his attackers in.
Whether added to mints, food, drinks, punches, or open bottles, the purpose of a date rape drug is to incapacitate a victim to make it easier to rape them later.
